What are some good ideas for a non profit organization?

I want to start one over the summer and eventually bring it into my school.

I recently started a group called the VIOLETS, Victory Is Ours by Leading, Encouraging and Teaching. It is a group of girls, ages 12-17. I am trying to become a nonprofit organization. The task is not a easy one, by far. I am not sure of everything that needs to be done, to become nonprofit. I guess it may differ from state to state.

If you are serious, than do the research, because depending on what you want to do, it can turn out to be very rewarding.

The group that I started will offer leadership and guidance to the up and rising women of the world. I don't know your age, but if you exist in this world, I am sure that you are aware, of all the turmoil/controversy between our youth today.

I would like to make a change/difference. I am tired of talking, watching and praying for change. I have a teenage daughter and day after day, I would watch her and her girlfriends, talk about how bored they are, how they aren't allowed to do this and that, how they want boyfriends, school is boring and all that spelled was TROUBLE.

When I was coming up, the world was a different place. I said, "I'm going outside" and knew I had better be home before the street lights came on. That was not the house rule. That was the rule, for all the children in my neighborhood. The streets were a whole lot safer, then and a lot less technology.

Schools had more to offer, afterschool, than HW/detention, band, chorus, tutoring and whatever else they offer, that makes you feel, like you are in school for 24hrs. I am not saying that instruction is not important/needed but, even children need recreation. Where can they release, all that stored up energy.

There is no place for teenagers to go, especially our 12-17 years old. That's how come, they end up places, that they have no business being there.

So I decided to do something about that. I thought that it would be A GOOD IDEA to start a NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION for girls. I teach them life lessons. We have discussions on all sort of (age appropriate) topics. We talk about relationships, self-esteem issues, nutrition, hygiene, drugs, alcohol, to name a few.

I want to open there minds, to all the world has to offer and help them to see that, the world is a very beautiful place, if you are not looking at it, from the other side of the glass.

I going to teach them about crafts, how to make money with the talents that they have. I have girls, who talents, are not being fed. They can draw, sing, dance, write, etc....young entreprenuers. I want, when the VIOLETS get 16, they will be making there own money, have bank accounts and will not be filling out applications for fast food, unless, it's a second job for extra cash.

They enjoy each other company. They take each other serious and respect each other. I love it. The best part about it, is that God is all in it. I can't push my religious views onto the children, but he is there, doing what he does. The girls are comforming, they are excited about getting together, they are focus, they want change, they want to be different, they want to make a differnce and want different from the world. They believe that it can happen through them, AND IT CAN.

If you want to start nonprofit, do something for the children. They are our future leaders. They need guidance. They need to be heard and understood. They need space to stretch out and grow. They need to feel important. They need to feel free. They need and deserve peace. They need US!! We need THEM!! Hey, this is only one idea, but good luck finding a better reason. God is Love!!
As with any business endeavor, find a need and fill it. Yes, I did say business!! Non-profits are small businesses. Your shareholders are those who invest in your mission either through grants or donations of money and/or time. As with most investors, they will expect to see results (returns) or they will not invest their money and/or time in your organization. Tax-exempt status is granted by the Federal Government based on your charitable purpose not your balance sheet.

Look around your community and find a community need that needs to be addressed. Prepare a basic concept paper on this "community need", and propose how your newly-formed organization will address it, and what long term goals will be achieved.
