I'm going to be in the federal government. Should I get a masters in public administration? |
Specifically the TSA (Transportation Security Administration). I plan on becoming an airport screener and working my way up. It seems that a MPA is used more often in local and state government and not for the federal government. Should I just get a Bachelor's in Political Science and just be done with it? If you going to start as a airport screener and work your way up, I would suggest you look at the list of security careers available at TSA. http://www.tsa.gov/join/careers/careers_... also look at their career toolbox page, http://www.tsa.gov/join/benefits/benefit... Because knowledge of a pertinent professional subject-matter field (core competency) is.typically a direct, even critical, requirement for many promotions/advances in federal positions, I don't think going for a MPA will be your best use of your time. Instead, I suggest you look at the core competencies for screener and positions you are interested in the promotional tracks and then look at the training that TSA provides to improve competency. http://www.tsa.gov/join/benefits/compete... Since most of the training appears to be on-line training, my recommendation assume that you can work/learn on your own and can learn using the on-line training. If you one of those people who prefers a more structure environment (aka, regular classrooms), you might be better off getting your MPA. I would go to usajobs.gov search for the type of position you are looking to get into and look for the taps about duties or qualifications....it doesn't sound like pubic administration. Get the MPA and you won't have to work your way up from a screener. I would definately say get your MPA. The University of North Texas has a top 10 ranking in the US on their program. |
