Does the TSA offer unpaid leave?

I'm going to be joining TSA as an airport screener this Fall but in about a year I want to go to a Latin American country and master Spanish but I don't want to lose that year to go towards my retirement and I want to come back with a job waiting for me.

I know that the federal government offers unpaid leave for medical reasons (mine and family members) and military service but what about educational reasons?

P.S.
I don't want to ask somebody at the interview because I think it will look bad.

What you are looking for is an unpaid sabbatical. Check the web site and see if that is listed in the benefits section. Most employers do not offer that benefit any longer and will not hold a job for you. (The federal government gives time off through FMLA which is a federal law that all employers must follow if they meet the criteria. It is only 12 weeks of protected leave)

I think it would make you look bad and may cost you the job.
