How do I get into the search and rescue field in Portland or?

I would like to get into search and rescue as a paid profession. Is that an option or is most search and rescue volunteer work? Also, I would prefer not to work on water

Most search and rescue teams are volunteer based. If you are interested, build up your qualifications firset - get a good first aid course - industrial level first aid, not the basic course - get yourself in good condition, and join a hiking or climbing club so you will be familiar with the local trails and mountains, because that is where most of hte search and rescue work takes place. Check with your local civil defence group as well, as they are usually involved in search and rescue efforts.
The Coast Guard does some search and rescue. That is paid (you have to be a member of the coast guard) but if you don't want to work on the water, that wouldn't be a good option.
Good question; I don't know if there are exclusive search and rescue jobs that pay... you might want to contact a volunteer group (try Pacific Northwest Search & Rescue, www.pnwsar.org). They would probably know of any paying positions.
