What is a GS10 for government jobs? Is it just a level of employment?

My hubby just applied for a job and it says that GS10 is required.

GS10 is General Service salary schedule, grade 10. Each grade on the schedule has 10 steps (think of them as time related raises). The agency can hire the person in anywhere in the advertised range, but most agency HR orgs have a set of standards to hire in certain grades, however the step within the pay grade is negotiable.

To enter as a 10 you ussually must have a degree of some kind, and/or specialized experience. The military service can and does come into play in various ways:

- Military service most often gets you veterans preference in hiring.

- Military experience related to the job/agency can count as experience (for example military police vet. joining a security related org/job).

- Military time can count toward your leave earnings (get you into a better leave category).

- Military time can count toward your retirement date with the new agency (usually you have to buy back your time).

Feel free to IM me if you have any other questions. Source(s): Personal experience
As far as I know it's the pay grade.

It's a level of employment, usually also an indicator of level of skill.
If it requires 12-months experience as a GS-10, it won't allow him to apply unless he has already been in government service, or has a significant degree or amount of experience.
You can go to this site to get more infomration on government jobs -- www.opm.gov, including a pay table for the GS-series.

GS indicates roughly a combination of experience and education. the range is from 3 to 15. 3 being trainee, intern type and 15 being agency directors. The GS rating and locale determine salary.

GS7 is thought to be entry level college graduate (Bachelors).

GS10 would be a very experienced person with Bachelors, or a person with a masters of doctorate.

GS13,14,15 are considered Executive
