I used to have a security clearance. It was issued in 1991. I believe that it was Confidential. I am no longer employed in a capacity that requires a clearance. However, I was recently contacted regarding a potential employment situation and was encouraged that a "past" clearance would put me in the running. Can I renew a security clearance on my own (or apply for a new one) without being employed by an entity requiring such clearance?
You can not renew a security clearance on your own. You can not apply for one either. The company you wish to work for will request the federal agency that is contracting out to them to submit your name and background security questionaire so that an investigation can be conducted. That background investigation will then be sent to the agency requiring the security clearance and it will go to that agency's adjudicators. They will determine if you receive your clearance. A past security clearance just means that you may be given a temporary clearance, pending an investigation for a full clearance, by the requesting agency. |
