Craigslist Foundation has a web site set up that can walk you through the steps..and there are a lot of them!
The term for a Nonprofit is 501.3C that's what the tax code will call you... a Nonprofit corporation...and that's just what you'll be trying to start a full blow corporation with officers tax reporting and incorporation filings and paperwork...this is a major undertaking! but there's lots of places that offer help

Before you do that, check out whether that's really the best thing to do. There's a lot of competition and waste--dollars and energy, because people start new NPO's instead of working with the ones that already exist. Warren Buffett saved millions of dollars to go to worthwhile causes because he donated his money to an existing foundation.

The vast numbers of AIDS foundations and breast cancer foundations, everybody HAD to have their own, I am convinced, have set back finding a cure and even providing help to sufferers.
