Family mentor in the Public Sector?

My sister has an interview on Monday for a job as a family mentor and needs any tips on what subjects or possible questions related to mentoring that she should read up on other than referring to her personal experience

Has anybody got any tips for her please

ok, she needs to understand her role as a family mentor to answer the questions. And..

A Family mentor is trained to give their time and themselves to help families in crisis. So, she needs to share that she has skill in:

Listening, assisting and encourage people facing overwhelming problems. Then get your sister to think of a problem and how she would face such a challenge and create the solution.

A family mentor is also a sounding board and a tutor, a guide and an inspiration, and a liaison to available resources for the family he or she is helping. Families learn to succeed.

They learn to cope with the stresses and crises life, build self-sufficiency and become functional, productive members of the community. The mentor plays a crucial role in this process and to raise their self esteem.

A family mentor makes a difference because they help survivors of demestic violence too.

For example, actually, here are a few examples:

After years of domestic violence Carolyn found the courage to get a divorce. However, her "self-esteem" had been crippled, leaving her ill-equipped to care for herself and her two small children. Carolyn's mentor knows that what she needs is time and support. Step by step, the mentor is helping her to build a new life.

Showing a New Widower How to be the Primary Parent
Bob's wife, who assumed all of the responsibility for running their home and caring for their three children, died unexpectedly. His mentor has helped him learn how to be the primary parent and has taught him the skills necessary to maintain a household and care for his children. The mentor has even brought his own family in to help. As a result, the two families share a trusting and caring relationship.

The Forgotten Elderly
Cora and her sister lived together for over 75 years. When her sister died, Cora was totally alone. Cora's mentor took her for walks and got her involved with programs at the local senior center where she is enjoying the first companionship since her sister died.

Teaching Young Adults Living Skills
Ben "aged-out" of the foster care system and had never been taught how to live independently. His mentor helped him to secure an apartment, showed him how to set up a budget, do laundry, and cook a meal. Basic living skills with which most adults are familiar were new and valuable tools for Ben. Today he is well on his way to a college degree.

What It Takes To Be A Mentor?

Mentors are the core of our program. They come from all walks of life. The requirements are minimal, yet the rewards are many.

Mentors need to have the commitment, patience and understanding to give one to three hours each week to a family in need, be at least 21 years o1d and possess a valid driver's license.

There is a mandatory training period, ongoing supervision and consultation by a staff of expert social workers, therapists and physicians.

So, get your sister to ask about:

1. Is there training?

2. Is their someone who she can keep counsel with to see through her development.

3. Is there anyway she can gain qualifications too with the training so she can be an asset to the organisation.

4. Get her to study the company or organisation, their history, how many staff they have, what other mentorship she does. Why? She'll be asked if she knows anything about the organisation, company.

Hope the above helps but here are some links to understand more on Family mentorship etc.

Good LUCK!!!!!! It's a WONDERFUL job! Source(s): http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_qa...
