Before applying for a non-profit 501 c 3 do I need to be registered with the state as a corp or other entity?


or do I just apply with necessary applications and bylaws. Also, do you really think its necessary to hire an attorney?

Yes, it helps smooth the process and makes it easier for the IRS to accept the organization as legitimate. You can hire an attorney if you wish. I'm not an attorney but I've done about 40 incorps/bylaws and Form 1023's.
