If employer (state govt) pays mileage, does travel time count as time on the job?



New job - hired for one site but paid mileage if visiting other sites which are 1.5 hours one way away. If I am supp. to be on the job 8-5, does this mean I am to be at the site 8 hrs. plus travel time or is travel time included. Comp. time is allowed to accrue. Most other emps. seem to be working 4 day flex summer hours but no one told the new reps anything other than be sure you are "on the job" M-F 8-5.

Different companies have different policies, but...

Typically, you are only responsible for getting to your normal place of employment. If you have to go to a job site, then it is on their time....sorta.

For instance, you have to be at work at 8:00. It takes you 20 minutes to get there. You leave at 7:40 (ok, slightly earlier if you are smart, but you can see where I'm going). That 20 minute drive is on your time.

Now, on Thursday, they send you to XYZ location, which is 45 minutes away. You have to be there at 8:00. You leave at 7:15. The first 20 minutes is on you (since that is how long it would take you to normally get to work). The rest of the drive time (and mileage reimbursement) is on them. Most places only reimburse for the additional mileage (subtracting out what you would normally drive to get to work), but some pay 100% of the mileage. Chances are real good, though, that they do not expect you to be at the other job site at your regular start time, but expect you to leave home at your normal departure time. In that case, there are no extra hours worked, so no need to calculate anything. If they want you at the other job 8-5 and have you drive 1.5 hours each way to get there, then they have to pay you for that additional work/drive time or give you comp time to use later on (that will be based on whatever is over and above your normal commute).

Also, when you leave, you leave the other place at whatever time it takes for you to get home at the same time as normal. If you have to stay later and you get home later, then the additional time is paid time.

That sounds like a perfectly legitimate question for your employer. No interview answers all of the questions, so you can ask them that question on your first day. Bosses should like a clarifying question, as you won't have problems later. Get it all out in front now. Good luck in your new job!
I work for the Federal Govt., You should ask your boss when you start work. We get paid our regular work hours. If you work 8 to 4 or 9 to 5 that is what you get paid for. you get the time you travel if you have to go to another site. If you are flying you just get drive time to the airport and back home, not the flying time if its outside you regular work hours.

Ask your employer, or ask to see the policy on travel. You will not be the first person to ask this.

The answer, obviously, depends on what state and, perhaps, what agency within the state.
