Do post office clerks get paid alot for what they do? |
My sister was offered a part-time job paying $18/hr at a small rural post office here. All she has to do is work the front counter. In this part of the US, most store clerks make $6 to $8 per hour at the most. Are full-time employees paid even more per hour? C'mon postal workers, are you riding the "gravy train"? I had always heard this but never knew for sure. If it's a part time job then likely there are no benefits. A full time job with benefits probably may pay less because of the addition of benefits. The other reason is the job requires some skill so in a small town it may be harder to find people to run the computer and other machines and know the general rules/rates, so it won't pay only minimum wage. Since it is a "public" job (the Post Office runs on its own revenue but still goes mainly by the Federal rules of operation) the pay scales are probably available somewhere on the internet. Most public jobs have the pay schedule available to the public, such as teachers' pay, etc... First off store clerks are paid by a company trying to make huge profits therefor less the pay role more the profit.Im not a postal worker, but have done similiar type work in mail room for a correctional facility. There was approx. 1500 inmates at this prison and I was in charge of packages and was my duty to also pick up regular mail 6 days aweek. It took sometimes close to 5to6 hours sorting and organising this mail. Now take Postal workers in a city with lets just say 40 thousand people try to put that into a days work.My next thought would be how would like for your mail being handled by some one with very litlle pay and with a non caring attitude. That letter from someone special may take a few more days to get to you or that long awaited rebate check.Posal Workers have a lot of respossibilities and stress that store clerks cant even begin to imagine.Ring up something the wrong price what a bit of butt chewing.Lose an important piece of mail or document or mail accidently gets destroyed, cant be replaced or refunded Icant even begin to imagine the paper work and problems trying to get it staitened out let alone what the displinary action may be." GRAVY TRAIN " more like a train with one engine going up a very steep hill. Yes, they make good money. Postal Employees do very well & they have excellent benefits... Well it depends what type of employee she is... if she is what they consider a career employee...one who has taken the test and hired for a permanent position then she is making the the amount most do...but a lot of part time jobs are not really part time and many work over 40 hours a week because they are called part time flexible which means that they can work anywhere from 4-72 hours a week ... this usually means 40 + though... however I wouldn't call the job gravy... a lot of clerks...especially in the plants work odd shifts but it is a very good paying jobs and has pretty good benefits. |
