Career change next steps? |
I am looking to change from the education field to working in the non-profit/political sector. I have lots of transferable skills, a degree and have been told I have a varitey of experience. Unfortunately the only people responding to my resume are those in the field of education. I applied to safety positions in case I don't find anything right away. I have voulnteered in political organizatins, networked, talked to friends and posted my resume on countless job boards. Informational interviews/interning and volunteering are a waste of time if I am not offered a job. Plus if I get the safety job I won't have time for anything that is not a paid position. Any suggestions I've been looking for years this might be a long shot but it might help you could get some offers at the end, it's free http://gsx1.com/freeaptitest.htm... then search google for similar tests As a Safety Professional I can tell you that it a growing field and there are jobs and money to be made...most definately. Safey is a good field to get into but like any other field you have to have experience to make the dollar bills. To give you an example I have been in Safety and now make 55k/yr. I worked in safety 1 year before I secured the job I have now...with a degree in safety. My first job was 38k/yr...and I was a crap job. Safety is a good field for the fact it is up to you in what you want to learn to develop yourself. If you have a degree and learn as much as you can in 3-5 years you can be making some decent money and with certifications and 5+ years you can be sitting pretty. Education really can't offer that. I am now on my next step interviewing for jobs in the 70k range...with 3 years of experience and a degree...it's hard to beat that...The only downside to safety is that you have to be knowledgeable....no if's and or butts. If you do not gain knowledge you do not get paid...by the time I have 5-7 years of service I will be making twice what someone with a degree in education would be making...If you need any more advise email me at okie294life at yahoo..I'll try to head you in the right direction.
