Is non-profit work a thankless job? |
I work in the fundraising department of a small non-profit, up there were 3 people in my department, I am currently alone. I feel as though I am being taken advantage of, and since I am in the office more often than not I never "see" the fruits of my labor. I do a lot, and I am hardly ever thanked by my E.D., and I have asked for a change of title, but was basically told no. Am I being a brat, or do I have a right to feel the way I do? Is this a common problem in the non-profit industry. Am I really alone? No! You are not alone! I work for a non-profit in Orlando, Florida and I my last day is August 2nd. I have worked with the company for two years. I have my BA and am working on my master's, but I just can't work for my position any more. The clients are hard to deal with. The staff are all under-paid and unhappy. And I would like to say that I just want to help people, but I can't help anyone if I am poor and unhappy. I do not think you are a brat. If you are not getting the fulfilment that you need, then find another path that is either very rewarding or very profitable. If not, you will end up in a thankless job with no money and not happiness. Believe me, I've been there. It can be thankless when you are working for a non-profit. Most are run by people who will wring everything they can get out of you and then throw you to the curb when they have no more use for you. I speak from experience I worked a semi-volunteer position ( paid $4/Hr) for 3 yrs I was promised that they were going to make the position permanent part-time with a significant pay raise ($12.50/hr) When they finally did, they hired someone else and kicked me to the curb. So weigh the pros and cons of staying put very carefully and if your looking for recognition FORGET-ABOUT-IT it ain't gonna happen. My advice to you: don't burn your bridges but start looking for a real job with a real future. |
