What are the first steps to starting a non profit organization?

I am currently trying to put together care packages for our troops and would like to start a non profit organization and have NO idea on how to go about it LEGALLY. I want to make sure EVERYTHING is legit and need help if anyone has done this before and advice on how to go about doing so... Thanks in advance.

You do not necessarily need a lawyer but you should consult with someone experienced in the field. You need to incorporate, get a board of directors, set up by laws, file for your 501 C 3, etc. I've done about 40.

Contact a lawyer that specializes in non profits. The application fee for a 501 status (non profit) is about $900.00. If you make a mistake, the IRS can rule that everything you do (or have done) is considered taxable and come after you.

Non profits are not as easy as starting a business. There are many more rules and technicalities.
I have multiple businesses and on the Board of a non profit.
Guess what? Plenty of organizations are doing this now. You don't need to start a new one to do it, and starting one will cost you about $1,500 in fees, minimum. Instead, hook up with a group that's already doing it, or a church who will sponsor you, give you an office even, and then just raise the money and get the boxes sent. Try looking at www.anysoldier.com for a group that's already doing this.
