Applying for a job when graduation is near?

I am graduating from college in December 2007, but need to know how soon I should begin applying for job positions? I read how college students already have a job lined up before graduating from college, or at least have job offers. I do not want to start too early, but then again not too late either. Specifically, I am looking for entry level social service jobs in state government. Any ideas??

CONGRATULATIONS!!!

As a former student myself (c/o 2006), I know what you are going through right now. First off you have the right mindset, you need a job post grad. It is not too soon to start applying. But first you need to get your road map in order.

do you want to stay in your college town?
do you want to take some time off?

Once you answer these questions (and a million others), I suggest looking into job openings and working on your resumes, and line up your references. Get all the help you can get from the networking you did at your college BEFORE you leave/graduate.

Luckily for you, you have narrowed the field in terms of what you want to do. Social service jobs. I suggest taking time to look into the different occupations within the social service industry. Some job openings require background checks, exams, and a lot of paperwork.

Looking for a job is a job in itself! So be prepared to put time aside to get yourself organized, research, decide, apply, and prepare. Set time aside every week, so you are not overwhelmed trying to find a job, while working on papers, exams, etc.

It's best to be prepared. Go ahead and apply. Its better to have many options, you can always say no thank you. Don't stress too much.

I recommend reading The Quarterlife Crisis (assuming you are in your 20s-even if your not, its still a good read!)

Post 9/11 this is extremely difficult. Especially now that the country has been in war for a while. Try the armed forces or local law enforcement.
