I am looking for a new job; I have a BA in Political Science, Minor in History. Anyone Hiring? |
I am interested in Politics and Government First of all where are you located? It makes a huge difference in what is available. When I graduated with my undergraduate degree (in a VERY similar field), I found that http://www.idealist.org was helpful, as was http://www.HillZoo.com, http://www.RCJobs.com, and http://www.DemocraticGain.org (if you are progressive politically). I had the advantage of being able and willing to be in DC. If you haven't heard of Idealist.org, it has a good mix of non-profit organizations around the world, not just DC. If you are in DC, you might want to contact Politemps (http://www.politemps.com). They are a temp agency that only hires "temps with a clue," in other words they only hire and place temps who have backgrounds in politics and policy. They are amazing at helping candidates find long term placement as well. Some of the other places to check out: http://www.publicservicecareers.org... http://www.Studentjobs.gov (Office of Public Mgt's website for entry level government jobs) http://www.USAJobs.org (OPM's website for middle management jobs - nearly impossible for a student right out of college to find placement through this due to the high number of veterans currently applying according to OPM staff) http://www.asi.careerhq.org/search.cfm... (They have an amazing job bank that covers both non-profit and political associations and organizations) http://www.jobs.icma.org/ (Heavily used job bank by local, state and regional government offices) http://www.EmilysList.org (A 501c3 non-partisan political action group that helps to elect pro-choice women to Congress. Their weekly job email is exhaustive) http://www.heritage.org/jobbank/... (A Conservative Job Bank run by a highly respected conservative think tank) http://www.politixgroup.com/politix101.h... (another great resource for job postings around the country all politically focused) http://www.fpa.org/jobs_contact2423/jobs... many are foreign policy focused, there is a good mix of entry level political jobs here too) Of course I am forgetting both the House and Senate Employment Bulletins too! http://www.senate.gov/visiting/resources... I hope that gives you a good start! http://jobsearch.monster.com/search.aspx... Check out the jobs in your state or local government -- In New Jersey, good options would be a County Prosecutor's Office, Probation Department, or Clerk's Office...Go to your State's website and look at career opportunities. Government jobs are getting harder to land but the salaries, benefits, and retirement packages can still be very competitive with the private sector and there are many very interesting positions. Check out the different departments, from environmental to administration, etc. There must be some area you are interested in. Civil service type positions can be very lucrative careers and you can still have a life because of the stability of those jobs. Yes, almost every company on the S&P 500 and DJIA employee lobbiests. Look on the career portions of their websites for internships, job openings, and career fairs. You can look and apply for federal jobs at the following web site: www.usajobs.gov/ Also, how about inquiring for employment with your congressperson's office? You could work on someone's political campaign. join the army and be all you want to be |
