What kind of Degrees or Qualifications do you need to work in the Canadian Government? |
I just wanted to know what kind of degrees or qualifications one needs to ork in the canadian government, or really any government for that matter. I'm interested in how a person comes about to work in the canadian government, regardless of what their job is in the government. First of all, in Canada you must be fluent in both English and French. And preference is given to citizens (regardless of citizenship by birth or by naturalization). Second, you need a minimum of a bachelors for most policy positions. As for what you should study it depends on what area of policy you would like to work on. I have a degree in politics and one in public administration with a focus in security and defense issues (my area when I worked in government where those related to defense). Third, many of those working on Parliament Hill came with their party from the riding. So get involved with local politics and you might be able to score a legislative assistant or members assistant position that way. Also, if you are in school in Ottawa (at UofO or Carleton) I totally recommend applying for either a House or Senate Page. The experience is invaluable. Fourth, you need to be able to obtain and maintain at a minimum a very low clearance, which basically checks that you are who you say you are, that you not a criminal or wanted as such, and that you can be trusted. It's a really simple form. Finally, I recommend you look at the postings on http://www.jobs-emplois.gc.ca/ which is the official website for the Public Service Commission of Canada - Commission de la fonction publique du Canada. The site can better tell you of the exact requirements for each position. And as for other governments, the requirements are pretty much the same Source(s): I'm a former Canadian Parliament and US Congressional Intern |
