If one number in a zip code is wrong, does that make the entire letter unsendable? |
my boyfriend is at boot camp, and i sent him several letters, which usually take about three days to get to south carolina where he's stationed at. but one of the zip code numbers is a 5 when it's supposed to be a 6, how will that affect the letters i sent him? YES -- Unfortunately the Post Office will not deliver your letter if the zip code is wrong, even if the rest of the address is correct. Source(s): I've had several letters and packages returned for sending them with wrong zip code Usually the post office will deliver it properly but it will be delayed. I use to work for the post office and usually they know what addresses are in what zip codes. It may be delivered a little later but they will most likely get it to the right place. What will happen is that the mail will be delivered to the town where the zipcode is for. For example if you used 00500 instead of 00600 then it'll go to 00500. if it is undeliverable there then it will get forward to the town and state you originally stated. So there may be a delay in the letter reaching him for sometime. If the letter can not be delivered at all it then is returned to you and that could take weeks. www.usps.com Most mail is read by an automated reader which picks up the zip code and routes the mail in batches. Which number that is incorrect has a lot to due with how it gets routed. If it is the last number it will probably get to it's destination with a minor delay. If it is in the second, third, or fourth number ususally they will check the address out when it gets to the wrong location and re-route it by correcting the zip code. Depending on where the letter ended up before they caught it, it could take anywhere from 2 days to 8 days more for delivery. If the letter is to a military installation where the person lives on post. Nine times out of ten it will get there. Military posts have unique addresses and the post office takes great pride in getting the mail to military personnel. |
