Does anyone know of any organizations or non-profit groups or individuals that help people out financially? |
I am 37 yrs old I was wondering if any body knows of any organizations or non-profit groups or individuals that help people out financially? I am 37 yrs old and I was just diagnosed with getting seizures. I do have a job but can not work now because of getting seizures. I have short term disability with my company that I have been with for over 9 years but my short term disability is about ready to run out and my doctor is trying to get the seizures under control and does not want me to go back to work until we get them under control. I am married and with children I would think that your best bet is going to be to apply for social security disability if your policy does not convert over to a ltd policy after 26 weeks. Check to see if that is an option. Not too many organizations will cover monetary assistance, normally they work with medical bills, treatments, wheelchairs, medications, and such. Maybe you can apply for welfare benefits to help your family out? Contact the United Way in your area - they have a network of social service groups & can probably connect you with the ones most suited to your needs. Good luck! The MacArthur Foundation gives out the so-called "Genius Grants." You don't have "long term" disability with your company? You can apply for Social security. I would do that immediatly. I had a problem with seizures not too long ago, only thing different in our situations are that you are married and I am not. I went on STD, then LTD. My siezures stopped as we found out they were a result of a medication I was allergic too. However, I would have applied for Social Security Disability. And you should not have a problem getting it, as you will not be allowed to drive. You should not be left alone with the children (if they are small and dependant on you) until you have the siezures under control. I would get the paperwork filled out for Social security Disability first thing, and then I would speak with an attorney. An attorney can get the ball moving a lot quicker on your disability because it can take months,, even a year or longer to get a check, and some of them want charge until you get your checks.(usually it takes so long, they owe you back pay!) Then I would check with your local department of children services they can help and they have contacts with most non-profit organizations that will be able to help you or refer you to someone that can. I would also speak with your doctor's office financial team, they have programs that can help you with your medical needs. There are also churches that help families until they can get straighted out. And another source is your children's school. They have advocates there that can help with a number of things, such as getting your children free lunches until your back working, helping with school supplies, clothes, and with the holidays not too far away, they can help with Christmas as well. I know what its like to have something like that happen to your family, and I know what its like having to ask for help .But please don't feel ashamed that your having to ask for assistance, that's why we have programs. Good luck and blessed be! I'll keep you in my thoughts. I work as a victim advocate |
