Do you have to declare non-profit status in order to accept donations to build the non-profit?


Basically my dilemma is that I need to form a non-profit organization to start a drum & bugle corps. But, I need to raise money somehow to form the company. Right now, I'm using www.legalzoom.com to submit all of the information. It will cost about $500 in order to start it. If I'm not a non-profit, what legal ways can I go about accepting donations to build the npo?

Call the IRS and get a taxpayer id for non-profits, it's free and only requires a call. You can then register as a 501c3.
