I am a rising senior in college and I am interested in working with a corporation's philanthropy or community development sector. Most corporations have foundations to support their community interests/giving but they don't provide information about how to become employed with these foundations. No information is listed in their career/jobs section either (most results are the popular finance/engineering jobs). Furthermore, philanthropy/non-profit job search websites don't return results for major companies. Can someone tell me how I can get my foot in the door for this industry?
If there were any jobs available, they would be listed on the corporations careers page, but remember that in comparision to the size of the corporation, the philanthropic division will be very small, such postions may not be available very often, so you may have to check back frequently. If you would rather not wait, you can contact the corporations and ask to speak with the philanthropic department - then you can ask if they have any jobs available or find to whom you should forward your resume. However, I think you will find that they are interested in hiring individuals with experience in and with the nonprofit sector, so in the meantime you may want to either volunteer at a local nonprofit, to get some relevant experience on your resume, or consider working for a nonprofit for a year or so, so that you will again have the necessary qualifications. |
