Asking for a raise at a non profit organization.? |
I started working at a local animal shelter. Originally, I was thinking that it was only going to be temporary since I recieve GI Bill when in school (so I don't really need to work). Now, I love my job and don't want to quit, but figured that it would easier. When gave my notice they didn't like it and now they are practically begging me to stay. The boss asked me the other day if there was anything she could do to get me to stay. I called them and did say that it would have to be worth my while. I asked for at least 1 weekend off a month and talked about a raise. My wife seems to think that I should ask for $9.50. I am now making $7.15. Even though they really want to keep me, I think it is totally unrealistic to ask for or expect $9.50 an hour from a non-profit agency. I am only making $8.00 at another job. What does everyone think? You can ask for it, but be prepared to walk if they can't come up with the funds you're asking for. That is a problem with non-profits, and you have to weigh the low pay against the good you do in the community. I think that it is great that you are helping the community, but if you have a college education, you should be able to find a job that makes more than $8.00. I make $10.50/hr and I'm still in school. If you really want to stay though, I would ask for $8.00 to match the other job, and then go from there. Ask for what you want. If they cannot meet it, have a frank conversation with them. No embarassment, just realistic. Then you will know exactly what's possible and can decide based on that. Isn't that best? |
