Why do goverment jobs require degrees?

It's not like degrees help them perform their jobs better.

To justify their laziness. They're government employees.
Most government jobs DON'T require a degree. Normally only professional positions such as doctors, scientists, and engineers REQUIRE a degree in a particular field to be hired. However, having a degree, any degree, may make you score higher when they rank the applicants for a job.

As for your suggestion that government employees don't perform their jobs very well, I would tend to agree, most don't. The problem with working a government job is that there is no motive to work hard since the company (the government) is not profit based. Basically the poor performing workers get promoted at the same rate as the good workers. Eventually the good workers get burned out doing all the work, and then they become (You guessed it) poor workers. The system just feeds on itself by turning motivation into laziness. There are exceptions, usually seen when the workers are in a small organization with a good boss, but most government offices are filled with the same lazy attitude that runs down from the poor attitude of the unmotivated management.
Lifelong governement employee, and one of the few to hold onto my morale and work ethic
Not all government jobs require degrees, but to answer your question, you can apply the knowledge you learned in the classes you took to get your degree to your job.
Because they don't want some idiot who can't make it through 4 years of college working for them.
degrees work well for accounting, computer science, engineering...................... needed for plumbing, carpenter, etc
You've obviously not seen the people that work many government positions in Washington DC. Many are lucky to have a high school diploma
