Where do I start if I want to start a non-profit organization? I want to start one to give single parents and their children a hand so they will not have to get trapped in the government welfare programs. I'm not really looking to raise money right now as I have the funds to start one on my own. I just need to know how to go about starting a non-profit. Starting a nonprofit is just like starting a business. So, you need to research, familiarize yourself with the type of organization you plan to start, funding sources (which foundations fund similar organizations, etc.), and of course get as much information you can about the issue. The easiest way to get a crash course would be to volunteer or work in a similar organization, preferably through grassroots operations where you can easily talk to an Executive Director and Board of Directors in the same network. It's not as easy as it seems and it takes plenty of hardwork and financial support. I'm not sure where you are, but in our area, you have to be a college graduate and have a Master's in Nonprofit Administration in order to fully be successful at it. It will tell you the rules and regulations to start a non-profit organization which is 501 c(3) corporation. Each State has different rules. You also need to file the same with the Federal government. The basic rule requires a board of directors, Mission statement, etc. Check with your local government such as the Small Business Deverlopment Council. I used to work for a couple non-profit organizations.
