If you volunteer someplace, is there any chance you can get employed for pay at that place later on? |
I am 33 and with no work history. No one wants to give me a chance, even after i offered to be trained with no pay for as long as they see fit. Someone suggested me to volunteer to gain experience i am lacking. I was wondering if i volunteer at the local hospital, would i have any chance of getting some kind of a job later on, at the same place? Any thoughts on this? Happens at non-profit organizations all the time. You might also look into programs that provide some support for volunteers, like AmeriCorps (in America). Also look into local programs that teach employment skills: your church or a local congregation should know of these. You should also read, "What Color is Your Parachute" to learn how to get a job. If you don't need the money right now, however, volunteering is a great way to pick up skills and you can make your own hours. Possibly, but probably more likely at a small place where people would get to know you, rather than in a hospital where they are usually large, and volunteer duties are usually different from what employees do, and the people doing the hiring would probably not get to know you. Good luck. I once went to wash pots in a restaurant for a bit of a laugh and about a year later I was one of the top Chefs in charge of the kitchens. Then I left them and never worked in a kitchen ever again :) You can do the same and stay, just pick any restaurant then work your way up. Get money while washing pots then keep your eyes open, next learn to do side dishes and so on. If you work at an hospital you risk picking up all kinds of infections. You always have a chance. Just depends on what the employer's needs are and how well of a fit you are with their company. Don't seem too anxious or desperate, but let them know your situation and tell them that you'd eventually like to become a hired employee. In regards to a hospital-- they may require some sort of certification/degree. But there should always be an entry level position available out there for you. Good luck |
