how much did u make starting?? and noww? or around how much do they make?? I m thinking of majoring in SW but everybosy is telling me they dont make jack...is this true??
The average starting salary for BSW social workers is 20-40K depending on where you live and what work you do. In comparison to any of the other human behavior related degrees (Child Development, sociology, psychology, etc.) you will make more with a BSW. Also if you decide to go on for an MSW you will save yourself about a year of education (so a savings of anywhere from 18-30K. Also those who tell you SW don't make jack may be comparing it to business or a science. If this is your comparison then it is true social work does not pay as well. But it does pay better than other human service related degrees. DA I have a BS and make good money working in NYC. It also helps to be bilingual. I guess it depends on where you live and the demand. Check salary comparisons online for averages. My instructors advised me to go for the BS which required more psychology and sociology classes(instead of BA) this helped me when I went on to advanced standing MSW program which I completed in 1 year. The work is challenging and rewarding if your heart is in it. Good luck!
