When an employer tells you they'll call you tomorrow and then they don't, what should you do? |
I had a job interview over the phone for a political campaign in another state. The interview went pretty well in my opinion, and it seemed like they were inquiring details if they were to hire me right there. The interview was about 40 minutes total. At the end of the conversation the person tells me to expect a call the next day. It's been 3 days so far and no call. Should I call him back, send an email, or assume they hired someone else. In my opinion it's pretty unprofessional not to call someone back if you scheduled a call. My dear Friend, "When an employer tells you they'll call you tomorrow " and does not do so , it implies that they have decided to hire some one else. If that person does not join, you are likely to be hired. !!! You could follow up with a Thank You note for the interview to get your name in front of them again or call and say your answering machine was on the fritz and you hope you didn't miss their call. Agree - send a thank you note. Call to follow up. No need to make an excuse. It may be annoying not to get the call, but let it roll off your back. There is no harm in calling for a polite inquiry since you were assured a call the next day. All in a day's work my friend. 3 possibilities: a. They hired someone else. In this case, it does not matter whether you call; either way, you will not get the job. b. They still plan to call, but have been busy. In this case, you can call or e-mail or wait, and may get the job either way. c. It is a test to see if you are really interested. If you call or e-mail, you might get the job. If you do not call or e-mail, you will not. d. They forget. If you call or e-mail, you might get the job. If you do not call or e-mail, you will not, unless they remember. Assume they are busy. Although this is of great importance to you, it may not be urgent for them. Write a thank you note, tell them thank you for the interview, that you appreciated the time they took with you. Say that you hope they will consider you for the position and if they have any questions feel free to call. You can email it. I would send it tonight- don't wait too long! Do not write the note as if you have the job. Do not ask why they didnt call back etc. Thank you notes are really good because they show proper interviewing etiquette and they show the prospective employer your name one more time. Good luck! |
