Is the medical coding/billing a good career field to go into?

I am thinking of going to school to be a health information technician. Does anyone know what the entry level pay is, and is this a good field to go into.

I was very fortunate to actually get experience working in medical coding and billing without actually going to school for it. When I was a kid I babysat for my neighbors and when I got out of high school I went to work in his Chiropractic office. They taught me billing firsthand and now I have over 6 years of experience in the field. Its not what I'm going to school for now but I'm still working in that field because its great money and easy to find a job doing it. Now I'm an office manager for a different chiropractor so theres room for advancement too. Theres so many opportunities out there for people who know what they're doing! I think it would be a great move for you.
Danielle, I just finished my medical billing and coding classes and I'm waiting to take my clinical in August. I live in Houston, Texas and the starting pay is anywhere from $13.00-$35.00. There is a huge demand for HIT's in Texas but I'm sure they are in demand everywhere. My boyfriend lives in Arkansas and I'm thinking about moving there when I get finished with my clinical and I know that HIT's are high in demand there as well. I really enjoyed my classes and I'm looking forward to starting my new career! Good luck!

Are You kidding? The American Health System is begging for people who are prepared to work in this field. Get qualified and start making a career for Yourself! There are so many opportunities for advancement.
It's a good career. I don't know how much they pay because I never worked as a coder. I was a Medical Records tech and I personally hated it. But it is a good field to start a career in if that's what you want, and you should be able to get a job anywhere you go.
As a healthcare provider I can tell you the field for good billing and coding technicians is wide open and much appreciated. You have to ''know your stuff". It's not a easy field.....you have to know medical terms and insurance companies as well as Medicare and Medicaid. But if you are good.....you're needed.
