What happens to cadavers after being used by medical schools? |
If a cadaver is diseased, what tests do medical schools conduct on them and what happens to the remains? My friend was cremated when the med school was done with him. It is the easiest and cheapest way to deal with the husk of what we were, but what we no longer are. The ashes are shipped back to the families for burial/internment. Many med schools hold their own memorial services for those who volunteer to have their bodies used for teaching. My experience was that it is a very solemn and emotional event for the family members, friends, and med students. The remains can be used for many things...it all depends. After use, they are properly buried or cremated as per the person's wishes. I imagine they are cremated after they are dissected. There are diseases and conditions that will prevent a cadaver from being acceptable to a medical school or tissue bank. This link is a listing of all programs in the US if you want to contact the one(s) in your state: http://www.med.ufl.edu/anatbd/usprograms... Medical schools do not conduct any tests on cadavers. Gross Anatomy, the course that uses cadavers, is the study of structure and function. Cadavers are cremated and the ashes are returned to the families. 35 years in health care McDONALDS..HA HA |
