Nurses out there please help. How long and how hard is the schooling for a nurse? |
I have about 3 years left in the Army, and I am currently a Military Police Dog Handler. This gives me a little more time to go to college (be it online or in a class setting) I have always liked helping people and I know that I do not want to be a Police Officer. Nursing is something that I have always been interested in. Any and all help, suggestions, Websites anything would be greatly appreciated. Personal examples would be awesome. Thanks for the help in advance! I am a senior at Ut Nursing school. I also work in general surgery as a tech so I know a lot about nursing. There are many different ways to become a nurse and many different career options. To go to nursing school- you can become an LVN, RN or RN-BSN. In texas, you take prerequisites of math science and chemistry. For me (and I think most people) it is about 60 hours (3 hours a class approximately). Then in one year you can become an LVN (which I dont recommend, it is the lowest pay and quickest nursing degree ) Most hospitals are on a national trend of reducing the number of LVN's they have on a unit. LVN's do what other nurses do but they cannot give certain kinds of pain medications that are more dangerous (like IV dilauded ) . You have to go find an RN to do it for you. You are restricted on what types of patients you can have, ie you have less critical patients. RN degree is only an additional semester- or two. You are a registered nurse, and can even become a unit manager with your RN degree. A bachelors nurse is someone with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing , and an RN degree. You get the same pay to be a floor nurse from whether you are an RN or a RN-BSN . But, BSN has more opportunities for advancement. This takes a total of four years. Nursing school and nursing in general is very hard. To get into RN school you have to have above a 3.5 gpa and study very hard chemistry, anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology. I have a nursing 4.0 and it has been very difficult especially because I am working and paying for my schooling myself. So, if I can do it anyone can do it. Floor nurses start anywhere on my med surg unit from 23-30 dollars an hour depending on what shift you work. It is very hard , exhausting, sometimes very stressful work but has a lot of rewards too. It is great helping people, having good job security and making 50-60k starting out is not bad either. Sorry for the long reply but I hope that it helps I went to a two year sold nursing program - it was very hard. But if you can withstand the first three months you can do it. Being you have military, you have determination that some may not have. It will be a job - and your endurance will help. a great deal of nursing is clinical and really caring for people. Also learning shots (on oranges) and the big 'dummies' we had for learning small things - It depends on where you live, where you want to go and how long you want to go - LPN - 1 year + state boards RN 2-3 years BSN 4 years with college MSN 6 years |
