I want to become a Medical Social Worker, I am currently enrolled to get my Bachelors in Psychology after obtaining two years worth of basic credits, and possibly, later on going to a M.S in Social Work. However I am aware that many RN鈥檚 do basically the same thing and have a very rewarding job. I wouldn鈥檛 mind being a nurse, RN, but I have no training. I have been told with continuing school I can bypass becoming a C.N.A(which I wouldn鈥檛 mind doing) but I am looking for the FASTEST route into the human services field with benefits and going to school for so long doesn鈥檛 entice me. PLEASE HELP! thanks! God bless!
Sounds like you are a bit confused in what you want to major in. I am a LPN which is only a year course, then you take a state exam to be licensed. I now have a Bachelor's Degree in Healthcare Management and just got a job offer yesterday for a nursing management position. It is entry level but still making more money than as a floor nurse. My goal is to finish my RN next year so with my bachelor's degree and experience, I can open even more doors of opportunity. My advice, take the LPN program if you want to go into nursing. You can then work as a LPN towards finishing your degree and make decent money. Don't settle for being a CNA, you are looking at $8-$9.00 per hour on average. Good luck. Talk to your advisor. To be a medical social worker you don't need an RN. You do need your MSW. RN's and Social workers don't do the same things. The only similarity you will find is in the area of case management and some discharge planning. However, this is not all a medical social worker does (especially in larger teaching hospitals that really understand social work and have MSW rather than BSW level social workers. Given that you have already gotten into a 4 yr school you may wish to finish your BA and then go straight into an MSW program. To increase the chance of this happening. 1) do well academically and 2) do a lot of volunteer work and/or service learning. If your school has a BSW you can save a year by taking that major and then applying for advanced standing in an MSW program. DA
