I have some questions about college? |
I'm 23 & have been out of high school for 5 years now.. but I'm starting back this fall to be a RN. I have some pre-req's ot get out of the way this semester before I start nursing school.. but here's my question.. I've been out for so long, & I've never been to college so I'm not sure how this all works.. What all supplies do I need? What do I bring with me the first day? What kind of clothes do I wear.. I know that's silly.. but is it like high school when everyone is wearing everything new? What will my first day be like? Just mainly taking notes? Please help me... Just bring a pen & notebook, your books, & your bookbag.. I know you will be nervous, but everyone else feels the same way you do.. Just wear what you feel comfortable in.. if that may be jeans, sweats... whatever.. Just relax & enjoy making a great choice in life.. you're gonna love it! wear whatever - casual and what you normally would. supplies - first sesh, pen and paper. i went and i was dead nervous but its not that bad lol. dont be late though cos finding a seat is murder. good luck i started college last september after a 3year gap. It's a very valid question. Here is a list of my standard 'survival kit' when I was in college: Mechanical Pencils (for any class requiring math) Ink pens Planner/calender Index Cards (for flashcards to study for exams) Rubber Bands (for note cards) Quality folders (you want to keep ALL of your materials thoughout the semester because most of your exams will be comprehensive, and you'll get a syllabus you'll need to refer to all semester) Your choice between regular note books (3 subject) or I preferred smaller binders with loose leaf paper. TI-Calculator (for math courses). Quality yellow highlighers (if you have to make a copy of something, any other color will "black out" something when copying) Mini-office kit with a portable 3-hold punch (to keep things neat) and a mini-stapler. Digital Recorder (this is a must if you are new to college...record the lectures until you get used to the extensive note-taking....that way you don't miss something critical). When you get supplies, stay away from anything flowery, etc...that reeks of high school. Get a QUALITY backpack like Eastman or Janzen...those cheap ones from Walmart...they will rip from the weight of the books. Spend the money and it will last you forever...get a dark color b/c they will get dirty. Keep an umbrella in your car at all times. Never wear heels...college has alot of walking. Always wear comfortable shoes...if you forget..one miserable day is all it takes to remind you. The biggest difference between college and high school clothing in college, there is no dress code...if you wake up late and need to throw on sweats and a ballcap...no one cares. If your jeans have holes? Who cares...maybe you are paying your own way and can't afford a new pair. Nobody cares. What you NEVER want to do: Never make the mistake of dressing for school like you would for a night out with your friends...I have seen girls do this, it looks trashy, and you want to gain attention for the RIGHT reasons. In college, if you need to go to the bathroom during class, you just get up and go. You don't ask, just be quiet about it. You can generally bring something to drink and don't have to ask permission..even something from McDonalds if the professor allows it. Same thing if you need to leave early...you just get up and go...however, as a courtesy to the professor, do let them know in advance if you need to leave early...b/c even though you CAN, it is considered a sign of extreme disrespect. Never, ever show up late for class...this will make a professor hate you faster than anything, but if it is for something legitimate...do come, and then apolgize after class and let them know why. Never ask in class, "Do we have to know this for a test"...if he says it, expect it to be on there. Also, it is expected that you read the chapter BEFORE coming to class in order to minimalize questions...but if you have a question...you raise your hand to be called on, just like in high school. Good luck! You'll be embarking on a wonderful career! |
