What jobs should I be able to get? |
I am 18 years old and a recent high school graduate in Oklahoma. I am having some trouble deciding what job I want. I know that not having a college education or certifications of any kind leaves me limited with a good paying job. I was interested in working at Wal-Mart but they pay is only $6.65 per hour and I would only be working part-time (thats where they put me.) I have some family members that work in Nursing Homes and make $9.50 per hour (they paid $575) to get their certification. I don't know how well I would be in that position but I really want the good pay and it only takes 10 days to get your certification. I know that working in a nursing home requires hard work and you have to be really caring (which I am) but I am unsure if I should just be guaranteed the $6.65/hour at Wal-Mart or if I should get my CNA license at this time in my life. *I really want to start saving up to move out into my own apartment.* If not, what places are good to work that pay well? Well, I have to say that it is a pretty much a judgment call on your part. But if you are not in a hurry to make a lot of money I would say take the job that gives you the opportunity to study. There are now online courses, which will enable you to get a degree in 2 years while you work. An education is a long-term investment. It will put you in good jobs. It will also give you a lot of self-respect. Money is not everything. There are learning years and earning years. It is generally not a good idea to prioritize work before education. It is like putting the cart before the horse. Peace and blessings! Don't stress out! I spent 5 years in college getting paid minimum wage before I found my dream job! I worked at Walmart, and it is not that bad! I started as a cashier making 7.50 an hour f/t. The benefits were great and you get raises almost every 3 months. If you stick with them, you can get promotions a lot too. But I moved. As far as being a CNA... I work in a nursing home as an occupational therapy assistant. I work with a lot of CNSs and have worked with more in my past internships. in my opinion there are only 2 types of CNA's- those who are committed to their jobs and love their patients, and those who whine and moan every second and hate their job. There is no in between! You don't get paid well, work long hours and literally have to deal with all the crap. Think long and hard and shadow a few CNAs before you decide. If you do want a fun job in the nursing home, check out being a therapy aide. Just need high school diploma. Ours get paid 8-13 an hour and love thir jobs!
