Will I be able to practice nursing with a misdemeanor?

2 and 1/2 years ago I was arrested for DWI and it was amended to a reckless driving (reckless was the actual conviction but on the background check it has a note that says "defendant was orginally charged with driving while intoxicated but the charge has beeen amended to the above"). I was wondering how this will affect my chances of being employeed as an RN. I have been doing really good in school and in life in general. I have a 3.8 and some change GPA and I have never had any other "run in's" with the law, not even a parking ticket. I am really nervous that I have messed up my life becauase of a ridiculously irresponsible decison I made when I was 19. Please help ease my mind! By the way, I have already contact the VA Board of Nursing and they said I need to apply etc and they will determine it from there, and I am currently waiting to hear back from some at the school I am attending.

I just want to know if someone that does have an RN License has been in the same situation. Tnx

There is really no way to know until you try! :) If they ask you about it, spin it off as a learning experience (as I'm sure it was). It was a mistake that you regret.

Good Luck!
I have a friend who has a misdemeanor and it didn't affect her. She is a R.N. She had a DUI. I don't know about something like petty theft but if I were you I would just call around some physicians offices. Maybe someone there would know. Or if you could find out by contacting the State Med. Board. I am sure they could tell you.

Good Luck.
