Demand for RNs? |
I keep hearing that there is a shortage of RNs and there will be for quite some time, however, in my area, Classes for this career are on a waiting list, and everyone I talk to says they are going to go to school to be an RN. How is it possible to have a future shortage of a career that has such a long waiting list to get into? As a history major, I know someone who did a paper on the so called "shortage." On the low levels there isn't a shortage. There are enough nurses, at least women. Now I see a lot of campaigns for men to become nurses. The shortage happens when you get to the master and PhD level. Then you see a sudden jump in pay as high as 6 figures. Also, remember that nurses are unionized, so to keep wages high, attrition must also stay high. That's why most nursing schools require grade darn near 4.0 just to get looked at. Never mind getting accepted. Colleges have limited resources (classrooms, labs, professors, etc) to allocate to each curriculum. This makes them very competitive. The waiting list may be created by the fact that few nurses want to teach(they can made more money working in major hospitals), there are limited qualified teaching nurses(few nurses get a doctoral or master's degree in nursing--they instead seek education in specialty fields that pay more), all medical teaching programs have the additional requirement of government over site and licensing--with class size limits. Also, the teaching programs must have an hospital affiliation--place to learn/practice skills. I recommend all individuals that have a strong desire to be a nurse and are having problems getting into a school for whatever reason to consider the military. Navy, Army, Air Force. Yes, don't be afraid of working in combat zone--most care occurs in very secure areas. Only draw back is if you fail the class, you still have to serve your contact out, usually working a lower grade medical care occupation. It's short now, not the future. To be honest, a lot of nursing students are dropped from the progam by the teachers. There are a lot of teachers that give the students are hard time because they simply don't like them, they have a strong accent, or they appear unconfident. Lastly, students also don't pass some semesters and have to reapply for another semester or choose to forget it because the teachers never change. |
