I have a BA in political science that I haven't been able to wrangle into unbridled success and happiness, so after almost 10 years of newspaper writing (which I haven't particularly enjoyed) I've gone back to school to learn a job skill. In June 2008, I will be a registered x-ray tech. I am terrified that I won't be an EMPLOYED x-ray tech. The newspaper writing I've done has been primarily freelance, here and there, just enough to pay the bills. Scattered throughout is a newspaper internship here, three months of actual newspaper emplyment there, but for the most part, I've never really held an actual job. Since last year when I started school, at my wife's suggestion I stopped doing ANYTHING financially productive and put all of my focus in learning this new trade. I'm doing in great in school and I love this profession. My question is this: How do I get a job when I graduate? That is, am I unemployable by HR standards? And what can I do now and later to become more employable?

You better pursue to pass any related certification exam or board exam for the radiologist and get certified. This will increase your chance to land a good job.
Well congratulations on your learning a new trade as well as getting your bachelor's degree in political science :) As far as finding a job, perhaps you can first get a job as a radiology filing clerk at a medical imaging office which tend to be in abundance, and then show your work ethic and technical knowledge if only verbally and move your way up after awhile.
I don't see why you couldn't get a job if there are openings in your town. at the time you graduate. Maybe you could check with hospitals and see if you could put your name in for a job to be waiting when you get your degree. Since you're a writer, maybe you could write an article about the xray tech profession...so they'll know you're really dedicated to it. I know from experience that when you have a degree in something...it's hard to get a different kind of job because they say you're over qualified. ..or they think you'll go back to your other profession. You need to start building references now...people who will vouch for you. I admire you for doing this. and I admire your wife for encouraging you.You can always write in your spare time..maybe write a book. Good Luck !!
Ask yourself this....how much experience does ANY healthcare professional have before getting licensed to practice?

None, that is relevant.

You are worrying over nothing! You'll be able to get a job when you graduate. When you do your resume, just say you were self employed doing freelance work and list some of the newspapers you sold work to....that's it!

Just work hard and it will happen.
Once you pass the Registry, or are Registry eligible, you are able to be employed as a Radiologic Technologist. It doesn't matter what you may have done before. There are great shortages of qualified techs across the nation. The job market shrinks somewhat when new grads enter the market, but trust me, there are jobs out there! Check Advance for Imaging and Radiation Therapy Professionals (http://imaging-radiology-oncology-techno... for job openings nationwide and for some great articles about our profession. Hey, you may even become a writer for them!
