Dental hygiene/assitsting? |
ive been thinking of going into the dental feild, but what is the schooling like? certainly it cant be as hard as premed or anything like that right? are the classes really stressful? what about the job outlook? Ok- first of all you are correct in stating that a career in Dental Hygiene or Assisting is not as hard as Pre-Med. But, Dental Hygenine and several other medical professions including nursing are very difficult; the acceptance criteria is set high to weed out persons who will not or can not maintain the standards. In my area, the competition to get into one of these programs is intense. I am in the process of applying for the dental hygiene program near me- it is brutle. Just to be considered for an application, I have had to return to school and re-take science classes that I have already had. Or in some cases, I have had to take new classes to meet the scheduled requirements. Granted this is not on the same level as the dentist, but if you look in the papers, or online job positings; there are always ads. As for the salary- 60,000+ a year isn't too bad. In some cases you can make good money and only work part-time. I do not know how hard the dental assisting thing is, but like wise there are always ads for jobs in this area too; the pay is quite a bit lower. I should also mention that the science classes had to be retaken as they were over the required 7 years old. Some schools and programs only allow 5 years before you must retake them. Good luck with your decision, but remember any of these types of programs are hard. You will have clinicals and state boards to pass as well. KLN is right. As a dental hygienist who graduated 3 years ago, I know that the classes are difficult and your life is put on hold for 3 years but it is all worth it in the end. The classes are stressful, no doubt, but you will make it through. Assistants make half the money but sometimes seem to work harder. There are instances where assistants return to school to become hygienists. I had zero dental knowledge before entering school but did well. I make 60 k a year not including bonuses monthly. good luck! |
