Anybody start out in Nursing and then quit because they couldn't handle it? |
I was just wondering, if anyone thought it was for them, maybe liked the $$$ idea and then during the schooling or clinicals decided that it wasn't for them. Maybe they couldn't handle other people's bodily fluids or taking blood... Just wondering... I did my nurse training for 3 years then worked in surgical nursing for 2 and a half years before deciding it wasnt for me. It wasnt the nursing I didnt like, the patients were the main reason I stayed as long as I did, and I didnt mind the body fluids etc, what has forced me to re-examine my career has been the organisation behind the healthcare and the work conditions. Things like..... lack of equipment that works, if you can get the equipment at all lack of appreciation from the management for doing a good job having to watch your back all the time competitiveness of staff cliquiness of staff lack of promotional opportunities lack of choice of working patterns, inflexibility in rostering long hours violence and aggression in the workplace, and not just from the patients too much documentation due to risk of litigation too much accountability when not appropriate, i.e nurse is responsible for drugs the doctor prescribes lack of coffee breaks lack of support from management blame culture lack of support for further training lack of money (in UK I can get same money for delivering parcels) It is a very rewarding job in itself, nursing someone back to full health is the best feeling in the world, but it is all the stuff going on in the background that spoils it. |
