Do you work with lazy people?

Me and some of my co-workers (ICU nurses ) work with some very lazy people. They have been reported to our manager but nothing gets done about it. How do you deal with this? Plus, we work for the state and there is the idea among some of these employees that you can't get fired for anything. Different races involved here but not just one.

Well girly welcome to the way of the world. I live in the south(florida) and i will tell ya there are tons down here!!!!!! And, i always seem to work were that is the case. Your mngmnt is not going to do a thing--you just keep plugging along, irratating yes but it won't get any better. I keep a log of one girl that works with me that is CONSTANTLY on the office phone or her cell phone. They are already aware that she does this and i keep a log of when she goes on the phone and when she hangs up and if it is business or pleasure. I have done with several of my employees that i work with. I know it is not always easy to do since we are working and busy but, if you can do it. Also if they don't know thier job and keep frigging up keep a log of that too and maybe make copies of the paperwork or charts of their screw up. I get angry about this all the time, and I know that if someone does not do thier job someone is picking up the slack--and it is usually me. I am from up north and we have a different work ethic up there and people always make comments about my work ethic---I used to work in the ER and would be non stop and then there would be ones just pissing around. I had this one guy(rn) ask me "you ain't from around here are ya?" I said "why do you say that?" he said you are non stop and running circles around us here! i said you are right I am from the north(ohio) and he said "that explains it". so therefore all i can tell ya is keep on your management and maybe if they get out of thier office and going to pointless meeting and stay on the floor(but then the slackers seem to always working when this happens) if the management started watching they might see what you do. Good luck i know it is frustrating. but, you are there to do a job and take care of ppl that need you more then anything, at least when you go home at night although weary you will be proud of yourself that you did your job to it's fullest and then some. Lazy people are everywhere and come from all races. The only way to get fired from almost any job today requires massive documentation. You need to write people up whenever their actions compromise patient care. Enough write-ups and they'll be gone. Unless, of course, they don't fire them because of the "imaginary" nursing shortage. (See another question in this section)
When I was a cardiac step-down nurse, we had a TON of these people. You have to document every incident in writing. Without specific examples that show a repetative lack of regard for one's duties, the powers that be can't do much. With proof in hand, there is little to dispute. They couldn't play the race card if they attempted to.

Usually what happens is, nobody wants to be that diligent to record a person's every act of laziness, because you get to the point where you feel like a spy, constantly waiting to tattletale on the person. And essentially, that's what it takes to get people punished, sad to say.

If, at some point, you have plenty of evidence that reports have been made and there is no evidence of improvement, then someone needs to elevate the issue with upper management, or union if you have one. Call HR into it. Rattle some cages, make some noise. If enough people back you up and the persons involved truly are not performing their duties, eventually it will get noticed.
i agree with both lady's . good advice
It is that way where I work. It does not do any good to complain. Management is not going to do anything about it. They just stay in their own world and make a lot of money. I have worked with a manager in the past that did not put up with it at all and I really admired her for it. This is the real world, managers like that are few and far between. I dread everyday because I know that I am going to have to pick up their slack while they sit there on their cell phones or sending e-mails. It always seems that reporting does not work. It seems that you are not a team player when you don't want help with what they don't do. I know for a fact that they get good evaluations and top raises. It makes me sick, sick, sick.
