Will it reflect poorly on me professionally if I leave a new job after a few months for a better position? |
I've been at my current position for a few months and was recently contacted by a recruiter for another position at much higher pay. If I accept, is it possible that burning my professional bridges could come back to haunt me in the future? A recruiter once told me that it is better to leave that position off of your resume entirely and tell potential employers that you took time off to take care of a sick relative or something. I don't know if that's the best thing to do but I was given that advice once. I didn't take it. Instead I was honest and said that I took the other position, despite the low pay, for the experience but learned that it wasn't for me. The days of working for the same company for 35+ years and retiring went out during the Nixon administration. Company loyalty is gone. If it is a much bettor job and you think you will be happy there why not? This can be a tough decision but you have to worry about you. If it is a higher paying higher status job wouldn't that look bettor on a resume'? NO! Why should it come back to haunt you? Give me a break! You sound like a fraidy cat with no back bone. Go for it! If you need the money and this new job offer is a growing position, why not take it? Always go for the gusto. Money, money money is gooooood. It pays bills. Oh, by the way, leave this "a few months" job off your resume. If they ask about the lull, tell the truth or say you took a leave of absence. No Big Deal... You have to do what is best for you !!! Your boss should understand if you are offered a position with better pay, who wouldn't take it. GOOD LUCK!! NO! it is never a bad idea to better yourself. Noone can make your life better but you. If the job you are in has a fast rate of promotions to be at the level that you would be in and the pay you would receive from the other job if you except, stay where you are. If not then except the new job if it has chances to advance. Your life is what YOU make of it, not no one else but you. Good Luck! |
