Seeking job employment in uk. is there a demand of nurses there and how are they paid?

I am a Singapore citizen, graduated in Nanyang Polytechnic with a Diploma in nursing. I have 2yrs of working experience working in the major operating theatre upon graduation as a scrub nurse, circulating nurse, reception nurse, recovery nurse and AU nurse.

I would like to work in UK and I understand that I have to undertake the IELTS before registration with NMC. after my completion of the IELTS, what are the procedures i have to do and how do i register in order to practice in UK as a nurse? I would also like to find out with my working experience, do i meet the requirements to practice as a staff nurse in UK? Also, what are the job opportunities in UK as a nurse and how are they paid?

Hi

You are correct when you say you need to undertake the IELTS before registration.

You will need to find a hospital or nursing placement such as a nursing home that will support an overseas nurse as you will have to do supervised nursing with them. This consists of two integrated parts, supervised practice and an overseas
nurses鈥?programme, which may run concurrently. There will be a period of supervised practice to enable achievement of the competencies. The length of this period will vary according to the individual鈥檚 previous training and experience. It will be prescribed by the NMC following an assessment of such training and experience. Supervised practice may only take place in practice settings that have been properly audited. Overseas nurses who are
unsuccessful following their period of supervised practice may be permitted one further attempt unless the reason for failure is related to the individual鈥檚 professional conduct.

The overseas nurses鈥?programme for registration must contain 20 days protected learning time. Protected learning time is defined as the time in which the overseas nurse is able, in her own or another practice setting or in an education setting, to comprehend the content of the programme.

The best place to find out more specific information would be via the NMC itself.

I would have said that your experience and qualifications are perfectly acceptable. Most UK nurses have a diploma and two years experience is good. Job opportunities can be found in hospitals and nursing homes under the overseas nursing programme. Where I live there are lots of nursing students qualifying and jobs are a little bit scarce, but it would be worth forwarding your cv to different hospitals so that they know you exist and that you are keen to work for them. The NHS (National Health Service) has a job site where you can look at current vacancies and apply online at www.jobs.nhs.uk. As for pay, nurses are paid monthly directly into a bank account and salaries are based on a banding system dependent on skills and knowledge. You will find an explanation of this on the Agenda for Change website at http://www.rcn.org.uk/agendaforchange/pa...

As a rough guide for you, I have a diploma and have been working as a nurse for 2 years and am on Band 5 and being paid 拢19730 a year.

Hope that helps and good luck!
