I plan on going back afterwards and getting my rn but I do not want to be burned out. Should I work a little and then continue to get my rn or should I get my surgical tech which takes a year and then get my rn. I also have a 5 year old son and I do not want to feel like I am neglecting him because I am trying to better myself.
I would advise going for your RN (associates degree) instead of surg tech. You can work in the OR as an RN and make a lot more money. There are schools out there to bridge LPN's to a RN role in probably about the same amount of time as it will take you to do the surg tech program. If you want to try your hand as a surg tech you can apply at a hospital for an OB tech (they assist with deliveries and scrub in on c-sections) because many will give an LPN on the job training for this and you could skip the school part. I knew a couple of LPN's that did this. I am about to graduate with a MSN as a nurse practitioner. I started as an LPN, then bridged to RN (one year program) and then BSN. I also taught for an LPN program and did OB clinicals with them. You will be setting a good example for your son if you work hard and finish school. If you wait until he goes to kindergarten he will miss you less, and school will be over before you know it. Both of you will be better off because of it. Good luck to you! if i were you i would just cont with my RN. LPNs and surg techs probably make about the same. My sis took the course and thats what your life revolves around for 1 year. But its only a year. I'd just work alittle. But thats my opinion.
