Getting a RN degree is it really worth the time to get into this field what are the pros and cons? I believe it is worth the time and effort to become an RN, but then I am biased because I am one! It is a very rewarding job, you see patients come in very poorly and help them recover and see them walk out of the hospital, makes you feel really good that you have made a difference. An RN is a job that is so multi-faceted that you never get bored, you have to almost be a part time pharmacist, physiotherapist, counsellor, dietician, social worker, doctor, activity co-ordinator as well as carer. You meet a lot of people from different walks of life and learn a lot from them. People put their trust in you and it is such a priviledge. You get to help people when they are so desperate that they dont know where to turn and you can turn their tears into laughter. You are generally respected by the patients and can form wonderful professional relationships with them. It is challenging but when you succeed it feels really great. Downside? The long hours on your feet, the telephone constantly ringing, short breaks, bodily fluids of every description, violence and aggression, stress with work mates, lack of support and recognition from management, lack of staff, lack of resources, but most of these things can be found in any organisation and are certainly not isolated to nursing. I wouldnt want to do anything else now, it gets in your blood, and the hard work and study was well worth it. Pro: You can basically work anywhere, the shortage of nurses is projected to get worse over the next 5 years. Con: High stress job. |
