RN's please help: I'd like to go to nursing school and have questions? |
Hello RN's out there: I am currently working on an associate's degree in an unrelated field, but am thinking about entering an RN program once I graduate. I realize that admission is extremely competitive, and have a few questions on how to improve my chances: 1. Will it be an advantage to have an associate's degree as well as a high school diploma when applying? (The RN program is in the same community college as I'm currently attending.) 2. I'm thinking about taking the required non-nursing classes before applying to the nursing program (math, anatomy & physiology, microbiology and psychology). Will having good grades in these classes improve my chances of admission? 3. The RN program accepts either an ACT or a NLN-PAX score for admission: which one do you think I should take for improved chances? 4. Will poor grades in unrelated courses taken two years ago prevent me from getting admitted, if I raise my cumulative GPA to 3.0 (preferred at this program)? Each school has their own ranking scheme as to how you are scored while applying. For the school that I am currently attending the only GPA that matters are the prerequisites for that program. The rest of the classes aren't looked at. They also want your prerequisites to either be completed or be complete by the time your program starts. Another requirement that you may want to check on just to be sure is to have a CPR certification. Your school should have all of these things listed on their web page along with applications to the program. Source(s): Current student working to become an RN Hi, Im a RN in the UK so your question about ACT or NLN-PAX means little to me I'm afraid, but I can certainly answer your other questions! Firstly, I believe that any college will be impressed by the fact that you have a previous degree as this will show them that you have a committment to study and are able to learn at a higher level. It will show them that you are familiar with study patterns and have the ability to soure information and undertake written papers, examinations and coursework etc. It will also prove that you have the committment to attend lectures and classes and you understand the level of work involved to succeed. Taking non-nursing classes before applying will definitely stand you in good stead as it again shows committment and an eagerness to succeed, and it proves you are interested in the subject matter. It will give you a good grounding in the core subjects involved in nursing and they will appreciate that you have put in work to increase your knowledge. Good grades would obviously be beneficial as this would show them that you have an aptitude for the subjects and would be more likely to succeed on a nursing course. Poor grades in unrelated courses taken two years ago shouldnt worry you, just make sure you raise your cumulative score, this will show them that you can improve when you have the incentive to. Also, these were unrelated courses and you can tell them you were unmotivated by their content. Tell them you tend to succeed when you are interested in the course content, and nursing certainly interests you and you are determined to do well! Good luck in your endeavours and I hope it works out well for you! i also would like to become a furture nurse...i have been looking at colleges for quite awhile now and i havent choosen one as yet..i made an appt. with a school where i can take my pre-reg.classes..i must say i didnt think that it would be this diffcult..but it is....i am however looking forward to busting my butt and working hard to acheive my goal..i have been working as a paralegal for about 7 yrs..and for the life of me have not been making the money or have reached where i wanted to be..and then on yahoo i asked a ?..and someone respeonded for me to be a nurse so here i am looking into it....i want staus and success..and good pay..so i think with this choice i will be ok..i hope..i know it is stressful but i want to be able to accomplish what is important to me and be proud of myself that i was able to complete and succed something in my life..but i realize its a long road ahead.... i wish you much succes.... All of the other answers seem to cover the majority of your question. I am currently considering going back to school for a RN degree. Our college requires that you complete a state-tested-nurses-aide program before you can be accepted into the actual RN program. So it might be worth it to check into it more. Also maybe by taking that (it's like a 6 week course) would give you more of an idea if you would like nursing. Because then you can work in nursing homes and hospitals to try it out before committing too much time and money. Also getting into a hospital, or such, sometimes they have a tuition reimbursement program. Good luck in your future education and I hope that this helps some!! |
