New job tomorrow...? |
I am starting a new job tomorrow (i am only shadowing for the time being) as "home help" for the elderly. I havent done this type of work before. Im quite nervous as I dont want to make a mistake and look stupid in front of clients even tho i dont know what im doing! Has anyone done this type of work before? what did you think of it and is it easy in the sense that I will pick it up quickly?Currently in between jobs as I dont know what I want to do for jobs/career, so this is something im trying out to see if its for me. Before I have done cleaning, dental assistant and kennel assistant. lol x Well done on starting a new job, I'm sure you will be absolutely fine! It is great that you are being given the opportunity to shadow first as this will give you an idea of what is expected of you and let you slip into the job gradually without any pressure on you. Being nervous is perfectly natural and no-one is going to expect you to know anything or do anything that you are unsure of. Hopefully you will have a very supportive and encouraging person to guide you and you will feel able to ask questions. Maybe take a notepad and pen so that you can take notes to refer to later. The elderly can be a bit scary if you are not used to them, just remember that they were young young once and just because they are old doesnt mean they are stupid, or deaf, or incontinent. Just treat them as you would like to be treated yourself, with respect and dignity. Try to talk to them in an adult manner, dont use 'baby' language and don't shout at them! Be gentle in your manner and dont rush around. Listen to them and and try to look interested, even if you are listening to their same stories, week in and week out... you may be the only person they see if they are housebound and my appreciate the company. Respect their home and their property and most of all enjoy meeting new people! It can be very rewarding work and should be something you pick up pretty quickly. Good luck! chill,, be yourself and enjoy it good luck .. you will be fine Everyone has been new at a job and will understand. Don't get frustrated, just say I'm new at this and still learning. Lol- well some of the homehelps i have encountered in my mothers home don't look like they know what they are doing either. You ask what your client needs doing- most likely you will be given a list by the employer- Mrs smith might want ironing doing, whilst mrs jones might like some shopping or old Ethel might want some cleaning doing- some just like a bit of company. You may need to do some personal stuff but you will be warned before hand. I am starting a new job next week- glad i am not the only one worried!! Hopefully you'll be shadowing someone who is good at their job. Remember that everyone has their own style. It's better to keep an open mind as to how the job should be done. Just remember that you are there to make these folks lives worth living. They have spent all their lives working to ensure you have a decent country to live in. So just repay their kindness, and enjoy sharing your kindness. |
