I am just starting out at the age of 42 to become an EMS tech. and was just wondering what I have in store for me. I will be going to school for my certification, but even before I become certified, I will be driving the ambulance. Any body in the professsion who would like to tell me about their job in this field? Thanks for your time with this.
I will not blow sunshine up your rear. I have been doing it for 5 years now. The majority of the runs we have are either respiratory or cardiac. I have been on COUNTLESS non-breathers and fatality accidents. I am not a huge throw-up fan and when someone does, i almost lose it myself. EMS in not for everybody. You have calls that are grusome and just plain discusting. But, it depends on the person. Stress effects everybody differently. Just make sure you have your stress releivers in check. I enjoy my job a lot. I am a firefighter too and that is my first love. I have seen a lady burning alive in a house fire. Our bus was the first on the scene and made entry just enough to see inside the house, since I didn't have gear on, and seen an elderly lady on fire. Nothing I could have done until the fire units arrived. But that's all I'm going to say. It gets tough when you work on little kids. But, I hope I didn't shy you away from you going through this.
