What's the difference between a 2 yr. associate's degree in nursing compared to a 4 yr. BSN?

A whole bunch of liberal arts (general education, non-nursing) courses, a public health course, a nursing research course, and a lot more nursing theory and nursing history-type content.

IMO, associate degree nurses are every bit as skilled as BSNs. BSNs are more groomed for leadership positions, however. There is a lot of debate recently about eliminating ADNs, because "in every other professional field, a minimum of a 4 year degree is earned". I think that really devalues ADN nurses and what they know and what they are capable of. We all pass the same board exams - if BSNs were so much more educated, they'd make different licensure status.

As far as salary goes, my hospital only pays roughly $1.00 per hour more for a BSN. Source(s): RN

The two year degree is more hands on during their clinical portion of school and ready to jump in when starting employment. The 4 year degree is more book knowledge and not hands on. Yes, you could potentially make more money in the long run but, when most employers hire new grads they are offered the same pay. Also, many employers will advertise for someone with a BS or equivalent, meaning the degree or experience.
