How does one become a Dental Hygienist?

What are the requirements? How much time in school, can it be a Community College? What is the average salary? Any additional information greatly appreciated!~

There is a 2 year training program and a 4 year training program. Requirements differ in some states. After being trained you take a standardized test and clinical practicum to get your license.

My wife is 4yr one. Worked since 1974.

Requirements for her included;

A pre dental hygiene cirriculum in a 2 yr or 4 yr college which generally takes two years to get, but probably could do it in a year and a half.

Then you apply to a dental school who has a dental hygiene training program and that takes 2 years full time.

Then you take the licensing exam. If you pass, you can work for a licensed dentist.

The four year program gives you a four year's BS degree and will result in you earning about 50% more than the 2 year AS degreed hygienist.

If you work full time 40-50 hours a week with a 4 year degree assuming you are skilled and pretty you could start at at least $50,000 per year in most states. If you work in S. Calif you could double that by your second or third year, again if you are good with people and very skilled.

It is mostly a female career field, but there are a few males.
Look into some schools because some of them offer a bachelor's degree in it, like Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (www.mcphs.edu)...My friend is in their accelerated program for a bachelor's and it will only take her 3 years instead of 4....I think they also have other options as well. If you were considering a community college, I'm not sure if they offer any degree programs, but you could possibly take the prequisites for the bachelor's like english 1, english 2, history, etc and then transfer...but it may be easier if you find a college like MCPHS that will give you your bachelor's in it in three years.....less time in college and less money to have to pay...
