What training/schooling would it take to become an EMT? |
college, special school, and how many years/hours of this training before i couuld start You must have a high school diploma. And then after a background check and what not, you have to take an EMT course, given frequently by community colleges, Emergency service departments and sometimes fire departments. Depending on the course, it's about 12 weeks long. After the course you have to either take a state written and skills exam, or a national written and skills exam. Both will require a small fee. You will be an EMT Basic if you pass the exam, your scope of practice is fairly limited but you could always further your training to become a EMT Intermediate or Paramedic. You will also need to be certified in BLS (Basic life support) knowing CPR and basic first aide. Source(s): Nationally registered EMT and LPN. http://www.nremt.org/about/nremt_news.as... You have to go to a special training course. You can find out more by contacting your local EMT. I don't know how long it takes, but they are night classes and take a few months. There are some tests involved and a lot to learn. However, there is no college necessary. Best of Luck. My roommate spent her summer getting certified to be an EMT. Contact your local EMS(ambulance service), they'll fill you in on everything you need to know. In many cases, they'll even PAY you to train if they are running short on paramedics. I dated a paramedic for years. varies by state some may have more than 12 weeks (I think mine was in the 6 month range). Techinal Colleges offers classes on these but ride along a few times at your local ambulance service see if its what you really want. |
