Can a degree from university of phoenix online get me a travelling nurse job? To my knowledge, the U of Phoenix online program does make you do clinical time - you cannot sit for your board exams unless you have completed the required number of hours in clinical experience. However, it is almost impossible to get a travel nursing job without experience working as an RN in an acute care (hospital) setting for at least 1-3 years (depending on the travel nurse company's policy). I have never heard of a travel nurse who was a new graduate. You will need experience. Source(s): RN Much of nursing education involves clinical work, which is actually hands-on. How does U of Phoenix do this? If you get a nursing degree that doesn't include clinical work, it's not real likely that you'll be able to get a job. Probably not unless you have some clinical experience after graduation I'd heard that most employers don't really find university of phoenix, a for-profit, 'online school', to be reputable. And traveling nurses may have needed some prior nursing experience such as in a hospital or long-term care/nursing home as a traveling nurse most likely has to learn to adapt to the newer surroundings really well.
